With its high literacy rate and traditional mercantile culture, Lebanon has traditionally been an important commercial hub for the Middle East.
It has also often been at the centre of Middle Eastern conflicts, despite its small size, because of its borders with Syria and Israel and its uniquely complex communal make-up.
Beirut is one of the most cosmopolitan and religiously diverse cities of Lebanon and all of the Middle East. The city boasts significant Christian and Muslim communities. There are nine major religious groups in Beirut: Maronite, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Melkite Catholic, Armenian Apostolic, Armenian Catholic, Protestant, Sunni Muslim, Shia Muslim, Jews and Druze.
The 5000 year old capital Beirut is home to 1 million people. The city has much history but if you want UNESCO sites you have to go to Byblos, Tyre, Baalbek or Tripoli. What Beirut can give you is a party scene like no other in the middle east. Named the party capital of the middle east for decades this city will fill up your time if you are into drinks, fun and meeting people.
We travelled here in early May and not the right time to go out but still good enough by Norwegian standards. The best time for beaches and partys would be mid summer (june to august). We had a few days for sightseeing Beirut and to meet friends.
